Havhingsten 3D is an interactive game-like simulation of the nautical journey of the Viking ship Havhingsten (“Sea Stallion”) from Roskilde to Dublin – and back. This project follows a different developmental direction for the visualization of large-scale data, which was initiated by the Havhingsten 2.0 project. The game-play elements include the ExCylinder’s primary tracking and visualization equipment. Two players try to navigate a small vessel on the Northern Sea within a miniature-scale map of the actual journey, avoid obstacles and pass through several sailing-posts while being presented a series of images and videos from the real-world event. This project is a good example of how the ExCylinder can allow multiple users to interact in real-time playful events, and collaborate in physical space to achieve goals within the virtual environment. By supporting team-play and collaboration, the design of Havhingsten 3D aims to enhance active and participatory learning through gamification of the learning experience.
